Crescent City Area Psychological Society
Welcome!
The Crescent City Area Psychological Society (CCAPS), organized in 2011, brings together licensed psychologists, academic psychologists, newly graduated doctoral psychologists working towards licensure and graduate students pursuing doctorates in psychology. The members live and/or practice in the greater New Orleans area. Meetings are every other month, in the odd numbered months, on the third Friday.
Mission
The primary mission of CCAPS is to encourage and foster collegial relations among psychologists in the New Orleans region and greater Southeastern Louisiana. CCAPS will support and promote the profession of psychology through social and networking activities; professional presentations; and public education.
History
On June 29, 2011, Carolyn Weyand sent emails to a list of psychologists, gleaned from assorted sources, inviting them to join the New Orleans Regional Psychologist (NORP) with the goal of creating a forum for psychologists to network and socialize. A small group met on July 8, 2011 at the home of Kim VanGeffen. The group has met every other month, with increasing participation ever since.
There has been a strong outpouring of interest. Psychologists often work in isolation from each other. Meetings help bring us together, giving us an opportunity to visit face to face with colleagues whose names we have seen but would otherwise never meet. Meetings have moved into restaurants where we have a happy hour to socialize then dinner and a meeting.
NORP seemed an unfortunate acronym to some. With some email discussion and a vote, on October 28, 2011, New Orleans Regional Psychologists (NORP) became the Crescent City Area Psychological Society with the more mellifluous acronym, CCAPS. In addition to bimonthly meetings, CCAPS now also offers ongoing monthly Peer Consultation Groups in Adult Depth Psychotherapy and Child and Adolescent Psychology.
CCAPS adopted formal by-laws in 2015, but the group has decided to remain a completely volunteer and informal organization. The prevailing sentiment among members is to keep CCAPS informal, with minimal structure. CCAPS does not have formal dues but the website and events rely on donations by its members.
