March Meeting Date Change

Hello CCAPS members–
Please make note in your calendars that the March meeting of CCAPS will NOT be on the third Friday of the month. That day is St. Patrick’s Day and we decided at the January meeting not to compete with or attempt to curtail any of our members’ celebrations or solemn commemorations of that occasion.

The meeting will be held on
Friday, March 24, 2017
6:30 pm
at the home of our president elect, Dr. Elaine Salzer.

She will be providing the meat for our dinner and we will bring side dishes, salads, appetizers or desserts and your beverage of choice.  Details about the meeting’s program will follow at a later date.

You’ll also receive a reminder of the meeting closer to the date.

Looking forward to seeing you at Elaine’s!

January Meeting Recap

The January CCAPS meeting was fantastic!  Our current President, Dr. Georganna Leavesley presented a workshop on working with older adults with dementia.  She taught the group about how to communicate with these individuals and their families with true sincerity, dignity, and compassion.  We enjoyed some great food and fellowship as well.  About 15 were in attendance including some prominent leaders of the Louisiana Psychological Association: Dr. Lucinda LaGrange (president) Gail Gillespie (Secretary), Charles Burchell (Treasurer), Kim VanGeffen (Professional Affairs Committee Chair), and Carolyn Weyand (Ethics Committee Chair).  Please join us for future meetings.  The next meeting, in March, will feature our current president-elect, Dr. Elaine Salzer.

January Meeting coming up!

Greetings from your new president! I’m very happy to be able to serve our organization in this role. I am looking forward to our first meeting of the year:

when: Friday, January 20, 2017, 6:30 PM
where: The home of our past president, Dr. Weyand

We will be having happy hour, dinner and an after-dinner speaker. We will follow our pot-luck tradition for meetings in members’ homes. Bring an appetizer, a side dish, salad, bread, or dessert and beverage of your choosing. Carolyn is making a New England classic, American Chop Suey. I know it will be a great treat, she says it is to New Englanders what Jambalaya is to New Orleanians. Its essence is macaroni, ground beef, and tomato sauce and she will add her own special gourmet embellishments.

I will be the speaker at this meeting, and my topic is Communicating and interacting with people with dementia. This discussion should be of interest to psychologists who encounter issues of the elderly in their practice, either in clients or in the family members of their younger clients. It should also benefit those of us who deal with aging and/or dementia in our own families and friends. It is a favorite topic for me and I feel well experienced in this area. Working with the elderly and dementia has been a long time interest in my education and practice for both my careers (as a registered nurse and as a clinical psychologist) I am also personally prepared through my experiences as an only child caring for my parents through my mother’s Alzheimer’s disease and my father’s vascular dementia, which lead to their deaths. My mission is to bring a positive focus to enhancing our experiences with the elderly and dementia.

Hoping to see many of you at the meeting!
Please RSVP to DR. Weyand for this event by email or one of the phone numbers below:
